Bob Callan Trunk Trail / Phase 2 Segment B (Project No. D11M0 – 2005 SPLOST – Dist 2)

Phase 2 of this trail project was initiated by the Cumberland Community Improvement District (CCID) as a single project to provide an extension of the existing network of trails in the Cumberland Galleria area by adding a 10-foot wide trail from Interstate North Parkway to Terrell Mill Road. The total length of this project was approximately 2.1 miles.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) approved a revised concept in July 2013 to separate Phase 2 of this project into two segments. Segment A begins at the existing Bob Callan Trailhead on Interstate North Parkway and ends at the Interstate North Parkway crossing of Rottenwood Creek.  Segment B continues along Rottenwood Creek to Terrell Mill Road.

Bob Callan Trunk Trail, Phase 2, Segment B, was previously evaluated and designed based on an alignment along Rottenwood Creek. Due to identified utility and constructability conflicts discovered during the design, the alignment has been modified, resulting in the need to redesign the project.

Construction for this project is scheduled to be completed in  the fall of 2023.

Traffic Information/Construction Impacts

Construction Phasing

Work will begin on the Cheatham Hill Road and Whitlock Avenue segments first. This work should be completed within the first 12 to 15 months. Then work will progress to the Burnt Hickory Road segment for the remaining time of the overall 24-month schedule.

Starting June 1, 2021, Cheatham Hill Road will be closed between Wade Creek Farm Drive and Cavan Drive for up to two months to allow for the replacement of a 36-inch water transmission line. This is a transmission line that serves most of West Cobb; it is not the distribution system so no interruption in water service will occur. During this closure, through traffic will be routed along John Ward Road and Macland Road/SR 360.

At the same time, crews will begin clearing activities along Cheatham Hill Road and Whitlock Avenue. Some clearing may occur along Burnt Hickory Road for utility relocations only.

The tie-ins to the new water line will be completed during a 10-day period when water usage is at its lowest, which is sometime between October 15, 2021 and March 31, 2021.  There is potential for “around the clock” single lane closures to be implemented during this 10-day period as crews complete the ties on either end of the water line. During this 10-day period, the contractor is permitted to work 24 hours a day, 7 days per week until the water line ties are complete in order to get the line back in service as quickly as possible. The reason for this is that the existing line has to be turned off to complete the ties for the new line. While this will not impact any residences (no water outages), it does create an overall vulnerability for the system.

Once the new water line is connected to the old and water begins flowing through the new pipe, crews will remove the old pipe and begin work on the required retaining wall to hold the trail.  During this time, crews may be working on grading and trail construction at other sections of Cheatham Hill Road and Whitlock Avenue.

Lane/Road Closures

Cheatham Hill Road: Starting June 1, 2021, Cheatham Hill Road will be closed between Wade Creek Farm Drive and Cavan Drive for up to two months to allow for the replacement of a 36-inch water transmission line. During this closure, through traffic will be routed along John Ward Road and Macland Road/SR 360.

In addition to the road closure, single lane closures are expected along Cheatham Hill Road starting June 1, 2021. These closures will last for 12 to 15 months as crews construct the Cheatham Hill Road trail segment.  Lane closures will be permitted Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the exception of the 10-day period between October 15, 2021 and March 31, 2021 when crews complete the ties for the new water line.  During this time, there is potential for “around the clock” single lane closures to be implemented along Cheatham Hill Road between Wade Creek Farm Drive and Cavan Drive.

Whitlock Avenue: Single lane closures are expected along Whitlock Avenue between Cheatham Hill Drive and John Ward Road starting June 1, 2021. These closures will last for 12 to 15 months as crews construct the Whitlock Avenue segment. Lane closures will be permitted Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Burnt Hickory Road: Single lane closures are expected along Burnt Hickory Road between Whitlock Avenue/SR 120 and Old Mountain Road beginning on or around June 1, 2022 as crews construct the Burnt Hickory Road segment. Intermittent lane closures along Burnt Hickory Road prior to June 1, 2022 are possible to accommodate utility relocations in anticipation of construction activities. Lane closures will be permitted Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
