Water System Agency Awards

The Cobb County Water System continuously strives to provide quality water, wastewater, stormwater management, public education and community outreach, and customer services. The Water System and staff have been honored with awards for persistent efforts to ensure high-quality services to residents and businesses community.

Professional and industry organizations including the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP); the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), a Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources; and the Georgia Green Industry Association (GGIA) are among those presenting these awards.

2023

Cobb County Water System (CCWS) was recognized as the #1 Water Utility in the South based on research conducted by an independent data analytics and consumer intelligence company.

Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) Education Program of Excellence Award recognizing superior public education programming.

GAWP Education Program of Excellence
The Georgia GAWP awarded the Water System, Water Stewards Program a Comprehensive Program of Excellence Award for its water, wastewater, and watershed education programs.

2022

Comprehensive Education Program of Excellence Award
The Georgia GAWP awarded the Water System, Water Stewards Program a Comprehensive Program of Excellence Award for its water, wastewater, and watershed education programs.

Water Distribution Platinum Award

2021

Water Distribution Platinum Award
The Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division has been recognized by the GAWP with a Platinum award for Outstanding Operation of water distribution system in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Wastewater Collections Gold Award 
The Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division has been recognized by the GAWP with a Gold award for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

WaterSense® Sustained Excellence Award
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Cobb County Water System with a 2021 WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award for its dedication to helping consumers and businesses save water, even with the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Cobb County Water System was recognized for promoting WaterSense and water efficiency throughout 2020, during the WaterSmart Innovations (WSI) Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, along with 33 other utilities, manufacturers, builders, retailers, and other organizations that partner with WaterSense to promote water-efficient products, homes, and programs.

2020

Water Distribution Gold Award 
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of water distribution system in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Wastewater Collections Silver Award 
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Georgia Adopt-A-Steam Watershed Award for the local program that best fulfilled the goals of the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Program.

Comprehensive Education Program of Excellence Award 2020
The Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) recognized Cobb County Water System, Communications & Education Division, with their Comprehensive Program of Excellence Award for Cobb’s water, wastewater, and watershed education programs offered June 2018-May 2019.  This is the fourth consecutive year CCWS has received this distinction. 

WaterSense® Excellence in Outreach and Promoting Labeled Products Award
The EPA awarded the Cobb County Water System the 2020 WaterSense® Excellence in Outreach and Promoting Labeled Products Award. 

Cobb County Water System did double duty last year to win an Excellence Award in Outreach and Promoting Labeled Products. As Cobb County partnered with Lowe’s Home Improvement and The Home Depot to promote its WaterSense labeled toilet rebate program, county staff visited the stores to update materials and educate sales staff about WaterSense, resulting in 862 residential and 305 commercial toilet rebates in 2019. To promote Fix a Leak Week, Cobb County distributed WaterSense labeled aerators and leak detection tablets at the library and a local senior center. The utility also attended a number of community events, including several farmers' markets and local festivals. In May, Cobb County promoted Sprinkler Spruce-Up and gave residents flags labeled “Inspect, Direct, Connect” with instructions on how to assess and repair their landscape irrigation systems. The County hosted a lobby display to celebrate Better Bathrooms Month in October and distributed WaterSense labeled showerheads and aerators to customers. The utility also partnered with a local electricity provider on an Energy and Home Water Makeover project to replace old appliances and fixtures with WaterSense labeled models for a deserving family.

2019

Comprehensive Education Program of Excellence Award
At the Spring conference in Columbus, GA, the Georgia GAWP awarded the Water System, Watershed-Stewardship Program a Comprehensive Program of Excellence Award for its water, wastewater, and watershed education programs.  

2019 U.S. EPA WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award in recognition of partners that have gone above and beyond in supporting WaterSense.

2018

Comprehensive Education Program of Excellence Award 
At the Spring conference at Jekyll on April 10th, the Georgia GAWP awarded the Water System, Watershed-Stewardship Program a Comprehensive Program of Excellence Award for its wastewater education and watershed education programs. This was the second year of GAWP's new standard of excellence evaluation criteria for their Public Education Awards, and Watershed-Stewardship was honored to win this distinctive Award for the second consecutive year.

WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award
The US EPA awarded the Cobb County Water System the WaterSense® Sustained Excellence Award.  This award was in recognition of partners that have gone above and beyond in supporting WaterSense.  Read the full press release.  

2017

Wastewater Collections Silver Award 
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Cobb EMC Partner of the Year Award
During Cobb EMC's Annual Contractors Appreciation Luncheon, Cobb EMC honored the Water System for going above and beyond with its efforts to provide water conservation and efficiency education to help its members to achieve one of their energy efficiency goals, water conservation.

WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award
The USEPA WaterSense Award was given to Cobb County Water System on October 5, 2017 – The Environmental Protection Agency staff hosts the WaterSense Awards annually to recognize those partners that have gone above and beyond in supporting WaterSense. Cobb County Water System was recently honored with the 2017 WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award, the program’s highest award. Cobb Water System is a five-time Promotional Partner of the Year and staff adapts programs and messages to reach customers through many avenues.

STREAM Award 
STREAM Award was received from The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District in September 2017 for Outstanding Drought Response in Metro Atlanta. The award was for Cobb County Water System’s comprehensive response to the recent 2016/2017 Drought.

Comprehensive Education Program of Excellence Award 
The Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) in April of 2017 awarded the Cobb County Water System (CCWS) a Comprehensive Education Program of Excellence Award for its Public Education and Outreach Programs on Water Supply & Water Conservation, Wastewater & Sewer, and Watershed & Stormwater.

Distribution System Gold Award
The Georgia Association of Water Professionals in November awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division, for its Outstanding Operation of a Water Distribution System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

2016

Wastewater Collections Platinum Award 
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Watershed Stewardship Award
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Cobb County Water System with a 2016 WaterSense Partner of the Year Award as a leader in saving water for future generations. Cobb Water was honored at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference on October 6, 2016, in Las Vegas NV, for promoting water efficiency and WaterSense in 2015.

WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year Award: Large Utility
The US EPA in October awarded the Cobb County Water System in recognition of extraordinary efforts promoting WaterSense in 2015.  

STREAM Award 
The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District Celebrated 15 Years of Innovation and Successful Water Stewardship. Over the past 15 years, the 15 counties, 92 cities, and 55 water systems in the Metro Water District have adopted and updated plans for water supply and water conservation, watershed protection, and wastewater management. Significant achievements include:

  • A 10 percent reduction in total water use since 2000, even as the population has grown by more than 1 million.
  • A decrease in per capita water use of more than 30 percent since 2000.
  • A 50 percent reduction in the number of sewer spills since 2001.
  • A toilet rebate program that has helped replace over 110,000 old and inefficient toilets in metro Atlanta.

The anniversary celebration also recognized impactful and innovative water resource management projects and programs through the STREAM awards.

Cobb County Water System won the Water Supply & Water Conservation Program of Excellence STREAM Award for their Green Cities Program. This a budget-neutral, direct install loan program that enables multi-family and lodging facilities to completely retrofit their properties with high-efficiency fixtures. Currently, more than 800 full sets of fixtures have been replaced with high-efficiency fixtures, saving Cobb Water more than 600,000 gallons per month. Also, thanks to our partners Niagara Conservation, Green Plumber USA, and Marine Plumbing for helping make this possible!

2015

Wastewater Collections Platinum Award
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year Award
The Cobb County Water System was honored as a 2015 WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year last week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These awards highlight the commitment of WaterSense partners to rebate, communicate with, and educate consumers about WaterSense-labeled products, homes, and programs. Cobb Water System is a four-time Partner of the Year recipient and participated in all of WaterSense's outreach campaigns in 2014.

A total of 17 winners and more than 1,700 other WaterSense partners have helped Americans save 1.1 trillion gallons of water and $21.7 billion in water and energy bills since 2006.

EPA’s WaterSense program protects the future of our nation’s water supply by offering people simple ways to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes, and services. In helping to preserve water resources, the WaterSense program supports the goals of EPA’s Clean Water Rule. Also, because saving water also saves energy, the program supports EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which will help communities save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2014

The Georgia Association of Water Professionals awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Public Education Direct Media Award
The Georgia Association of Water Professionals awarded the Cobb County Watershed Stewardship Program the Public Education Direct Media Award.

WaterSense Partner of the Year Award
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Cobb County Water System (CCWS) with a 2014 WaterSense Partner of the Year award. The Water Efficiency Program was honored at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference for its commitment to water efficiency and efforts to educate Americans about WaterSense during 2013. 

Rivers Alive Waterway Clean-up Award
In recognition of group leadership of volunteers working to improve Georgia's waterways, the Georgia EPD awarded the Cobb County Watershed Stewardship Program the Rivers Alive Waterway Clean-up Award (Club Category).

Watershed Award 
The Georgia EPD awarded the Cobb County Watershed Stewardship Program for the local program that best fulfilled the goals of the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Program during the 2012-2013 reporting year.

2013

Watershed Award 
In recognition of achievements in F.O.G Programming and Approaches in the largest category (1,000 -5,000+ FSEs), the Georgia F.O.G. Alliance awarded the Cobb County Water System F.O.G. Program the 2013 Program of the Year Award.

Wastewater Collections Gold Award 2013
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

GAWP Laboratory Quality Assurance Award
The County Water System, Water Quality Laboratory Division was a recipient of the 2013 Quality Assurance award presented by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. The Award was presented under the category of Municipal Wastewater of over 20 million gallons per day.

2012

GAWP Gold Award for excellence in management, maintenance, and operation of their wastewater collection systems.

Innovative Initiative Award
GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System Watershed Stewardship Program a Public Education Innovative Initiative Award for its Ecological Tips Video Series for the creative program which uses edgy or nonconventional approach to public outreach.

2011

WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year
Cobb County was honored as the 2011 WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year by the Environmental Protection Agency. Cobb educates consumers on water efficiency through events and presentations, leading to an 80 percent familiarity of WaterSense among local consumers, compared to just 10 percent a few years ago. Cobb began its water efficiency program in 2005 and has seen its per capita water use drop from 126 gallons per person, per day in 2005 to 113 per person per day in 2010.

2010

GAWP Laboratory Quality Assurance Award
The County Water System, Water Quality Laboratory Division was a recipient of the 2010 Quality Assurance award presented by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. The Award was presented under the category of Municipal Wastewater of over 20 million gallons per day.

Georgia Adopt-A-Stream in Action Award
The Brooke and Branch Puppet Show produced by Cobb County Watershed-Stewardship Program was honored with The Adopt-A-stream in Action Award by Georgia Adopt-A-Stream for effectively utilizing non-traditional formats to introduce the importance of environmental stewardship to raise awareness about water quality to thousands of students across Cobb County.

2009

Outstanding Operation & Distribution System
GAWP presented to the County Water System, Maintenance Division an Outstanding Operation of a Water Distribution System Award 2009 in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 customers). This award was processed based on a 97.25 out of a possible 100 points figuration. This was the highest ever awarded to a Water System by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP).

WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year Award
EPA awarded the Cobb County Water System Watershed Efficiency Program the WaterSense Promotional Partner of the Year Award.

2008

GAWP Wastewater Collections Award 
Awarded to the Cobb County Water System for Outstanding Operation of a Wastewater Collection System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Watershed Award
EPD awarded the Cobb County Water System Watershed Stewardship Program the Watershed Award.

2007

GA Department of Natural Resources, EPD Watershed Award
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources presented Cobb County Adopt-A-Stream Program the EPD Watershed Award to the Cobb County Water System in recognition of Governmental Agencies that have successfully implemented the goals of Adopt-A-Stream.

GA EPD Adopt-A-Stream in Action Award 
Presented to the Cobb County Water System Adopt-A-Stream program for promoting watershed awareness through the arts, in recognition of the Color Your Watershed Mural Program.

Fox McCarthy Water Wise Award
The GAWP presented to the Cobb County Water System for its Outstanding Water Efficiency Program. Evaluation criteria include the areas of planning, execution, effectiveness, innovation, transferability, and assurance of longevity.

GAWP Laboratory Quality Assurance Award
The County Water System, Water Quality Laboratory Division was a recipient of the 2007 Quality Assurance award presented by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. The Award was presented under the category of Municipal Wastewater of over 20 million gallons per day.

2006

Wastewater Collections Award
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System for outstanding operation of Wastewater collection system in the category of large systems (more than 50,000 customers).

Distribution System of the Year Award
The GAWP awarded the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division, for Outstanding Operation of a Water Distribution System in the category of Large Systems (Over 50,000 Customers).

Public Education Program of the Year Award
The GAWP awarded the CCWS a Public Education Program of the Year Award 2006, an exemplary public education program that promotes understanding of the water and wastewater industry and the importance of protecting our water resources.

Rivers Alive Outstanding Waterway Cleanup - Ocean Category (over 200 participants)
Awarded the Rivers Alive Outstanding Water Way Cleanup Award – Ocean Category (over 200 participants) to the Cobb County Water System (in partnership with Mabry Middle School Environmental Club, KCB, and CCPR&CA).

Achievement Award
Awarded by the National Association of counties in recognition of an innovative program which contributes to and enhances county government in the United States.

 

 

2005

State Award for Engineering Excellence
Awarded to the Cobb County Water System for the Chattahoochee Tunnel by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia (ACEC) and the Georgia Engineering Alliance.

GA-ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Project 
Received for the engineering and planning of the Chattahoochee Tunnel. Evaluation criteria include the areas of contributions to the well-being of people and communities; resourcefulness in planning and solving design challenges; pioneering in use of materials and methods; innovations in construction; impact on the physical environment; beneficial and adverse effects of the project, including aesthetic value; unique approaches and partnerships; risk management; fiscal responsibility; and consideration of sustainability or maintenance. This award recognizes the efforts of all involved to perceive future needs and marks a job well done.

WaterFirst Community Designation 
Became the 6th community in the State of Georgia to obtain the WaterFirst designation for excellent water stewardship. This designation brings with it reduced interest rates for water and sewer project loans as well as improved chances for Community Development.

The water system holds the highest bond ratings of any water-sewer system in the nation, as ranked by Wall Street's leading bond companies. What that means is lower interest rates for residents when money is borrowed.

2004

The County Water System, Water Quality Laboratory Division was a recipient of the 2004 Quality Assurance award presented by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. The Award was presented under the category of Municipal Wastewater of over 20 million gallons per day.

2003

EPA National Clean Water Act Recognition Award
Received by the South Cobb WRF, for a facility in the advanced treatment category greater than 10 MGD.

GAWP Award for Outstanding Operation of Water Collection System
Presented in the category of Large Systems (over 50,000 customers) for excellent operation and management.

2002

GAWP Public Education Program of the Year Award 
Presented for an exemplary public education program that promotes understanding of the water and wastewater industry and the importance of protecting our water resources.

EPA National Clean Water Partner for the 21st Century
Received by the Cobb County Water System in recognition of extraordinary actions taken by a local governmental agency to protect watersheds beyond the requirements of the Clean Water Act.

GAWP Award for Outstanding Operation of Water Distribution System
Presented in the category of Large Systems (over 50,000 customers) for excellent operation and management.

2001

GAWP Award for Outstanding Operation of Water Collection System
Presented in the category of Large Systems (over 50,000 customers) for excellent operation and management.

GAWP Laboratory Quality Assurance Award
The County Water System, Water Quality Laboratory Division was a recipient of the 2001 Quality Assurance award presented by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. The Award was presented under the category of Municipal Wastewater of over 20 million gallons per day.

1999 & 2000

GAWP Award for Outstanding Operation of Water Distribution System
Presented in the category of Large Systems (over 50,000 customers) for excellent operation and management.

GAWP Award for Outstanding Operation of Water Collection System
Presented in the category of Large Systems (over 50,000 customers) for excellent operation and management.

Consulting Engineers of Georgia Hornor Award 
Received excellence in the field of engineering for the South Cobb WRF 1999.

1998

AWWA Presidents Gold Performance Award 
Recognition of our safety programs reducing disabling injuries by 75 percent over a three-year period.

AWWA Excellence Award 
Reduction in disabling injuries by 25 percent from the previous year.
