(Marietta, GA – May 16, 2023) Cobb County District Attorney Flynn D. Broady, Jr. announces that Angel Saenz, age 24, pled guilty to one count of armed robbery, one count of aggravated assault, one count of obstruction, and one count of possession of firearm by convicted felon. Saenz also pled guilty on a related case to one count of possession of a schedule I controlled substance, one count of possession of firearm during commission of a felony, and one count of possession of firearm by convicted felon. Superior Court Judge Sonja N. Brown sentenced Saenz to 15 years, with the first eight to be served in prison.

On January 5, 2022, Cobb County police officers were dispatched to an armed robbery call at the Extended Stay America Hotel in Cobb County, GA. The victim, who called police using a phone at the front desk, told officers that a male held her at gunpoint to steal her cellphone. Officers learned that the victim, who had recently moved to the area, met and befriended the Defendant while walking her dog around the Extended Stay. The Defendant and victim were talking in her hotel room when Defendant produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and demanded her iPhone. Defendant then fled the scene, leaving his own cell phone behind. Officers on scene located the Defendant’s phone and found a photo of his license which identified him as Angel Saenz. The license photo matched victim’s description of the Defendant, who had distinctive face tattoos. Despite their best efforts, officers did not locate Defendant on scene. Saenz was arrested two weeks later, outside a Shell Gas Station on Delk Road. Officers located a 9mm handgun and a bag containing suspected narcotics on his person. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the presence of heroin in the narcotics seized.

Assistant District Attorney Margaret Bennett prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Georgia. Attorney Lauryn Perry represented Saenz at the plea. After Sentencing ADA Bennett commented, “The victim in this case still deals with lingering trauma from the defendant’s dangerous actions. This sentence is a just outcome. I commend the Cobb County Police Department for their hard work on this case, and diligent apprehension of Angel Saenz.”
