Cobb County Public Library’s National Library Card Sign-up Month celebration in September features the expansion of services for library cardholders and initiatives designed to meet community needs.

Cobb libraries and libraries nationwide are joining the American Library Association (ALA) to remind students, parents and caregivers of the value of signing up for a library card for success in school and lifelong learning.

Library Card Sign-up Month highlights in Cobb County include the return of Sunday afternoon library hours, 1 pm to 5 pm, at the Switzer, Mountain View, South Cobb and West Cobb libraries starting on September 11; the launch on September 2 of the Virtual Switzer Library interactive site designed to provide remote tours of all the library offers; and appointments for first-time passport applications will be accepted at the West Cobb and Mountain View libraries beginning September 6.

“This September is a very special time for Cobb libraries,” said Cobb Library Director Helen Poyer. “We are grateful for the extensive work of developing initiatives that are going live in September in support of community impact in education, health and wellness, workforce development and for fostering positive relationships for all ages.”

Special outreach events in September include North Cobb Regional Library Pop-Up Library and storytime events at 10:15 am and 11:15 am at the Swift-Cantrell Park, 3140 Old 41 Highway in Kennesaw, on Thursday, September 1, and Logan Farm Park, 4405 Cherokee St. in Acworth on Friday, September 2. Teens are invited to visit Switzer Library’s Teen Room, 266 Roswell St. in Marietta, to show their library cards or sign-up for the card to receive a treat.

Events on the Cobb library calendar for September include storytimes for babies and toddlers, a range of book discussion gatherings, arts and crafts programs for children and adults; computer and technology training sessions, programs for veterans and entrepreneurs, and events on history and nature.

Throughout Library Card Sign-up Month, digital resources available for free for Cobb library cardholders will be featured, including the Kanopy collection of popular movies, documentaries, TV shows and kids’ content.

CCPL library cards are free for Cobb residents, teachers in Cobb, Cobb business and property owners, and employees of Cobb County government. For details, visit cobbcat.org/librarycard.

Students in the Cobb County and Marietta City school districts have access to free library resources through Library PASS, an initiative of CCPL and the school systems. For information, visit cobbcat.org/librarypass.

The 2022 honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-up Month are Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) and her sister, author and educator Cara Mentzel. Throughout Library Card Sign-up Month, they want us to explore all the library has to offer, like new children’s books, access to technology, and educational programming, and to remind everyone the library is one of the best places to find your voice.
