Chairwoman Cupid statement on incident at McEachern High
Chairwoman Lisa Cupid issued the following statement on the February 1, 2024, shooting incident at McEachern High.
Cobb County Residents,
It is with a heavy heart that I address the recent incident at McEachern High School. The safety and well-being of our students and staff are of utmost priority, and any act of violence within our school community is deeply troubling. Earlier today, the Powder Springs Police Department reported a shooting incident at McEachern High School in Cobb County.
I want to assure parents, students, and the entire community that our law enforcement agencies, including the school's police and Cobb County Police Department, are actively working to secure the campus and thoroughly investigate the circumstances of this incident. According to the information available, two individuals, who are not current McEachern students, were shot in a parking lot on the campus. Fortunately, their injuries appear to be non-life-threatening. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this challenging time. Police personnel remain on-site.
For the safety of students and staff, we ask that parents refrain from coming on campus at this time. Bus service has resumed, and after-school activities have been canceled. I want to emphasize that the authorities are actively working on identifying the individuals involved and understanding the circumstances surrounding this incident. The injuries to the victims are not believed to be life-threatening, and the search for the shooter or shooters continues.
We understand that incidents like these can cause anxiety and concern among our community members. Counseling and support services will be available for students and staff needing assistance processing these events. I want to express my gratitude to the law enforcement agencies, school officials, and emergency responders who are diligently handling this situation.
We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Together, as a resilient community, we will support one another through these challenging times.
