The Middle School Essay Contest is a competition hosted by the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District which challenges students to think critically about our region’s water resources and raises awareness for conservation and preservation of water quality and quantity in metro Atlanta. This year, students were challenged to write a 300-500 word essay on the following topic: How Do You Value Water? To address this topic, students were asked to think about all the things they do in a day that require water, and then to imagine what their day would look like without water.

Over 600 essays from fifteen different counties within metro-Atlanta were submitted to the contest. Elena West, a sixth-grader from William Benson Simpson Middle School in Cobb County, placed 2nd overall and was honored for her achievement at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.

Miss West remarked about the impact of the experience writing the essay: “I definitely value water way more than I did before…I will always try and point out to everyone to conserve water as much as they can, and also spread awareness.”  Click here to view the gallery.
