About this Event

The Stream Habitat and Visual Survey Workshop is intended to train volunteers on how to assess a stream by rating parameters such as channel bottom materials, sinuosity, bank stability, streamside vegetation, and more.  Stream habitat includes the physical and chemical conditions of the ecosystem and plays a large role in the aquatic life you will find. By conducting the visual survey and cross section, you will be able to quantitatively document the condition of the stream habitat and the riparian zone at that given point in time. When conducting these surveys on a quarterly basis, any changes in the stream’s health will be apparent in your data. The first portion of this workshop will be held at the Cobb County Water System Water Quality Laboratory Training Center and will cover the material necessary to successfully complete a visual/habitat survey. From there, we will travel to a nearby stream with easy access (you will need to provide your own vehicle, or carpool with other participants) and complete the hands-on training. The workshop will be dismissed from the stream location no later than 1:00 PM. Participants do not need to be currently active or certified in the Adopt-A-Stream monitoring program to participate in this workshop, but should bring a good sense of humor and a willingness to share thoughts and ideas about assessing a stream. Please bring a packed lunch, drinks, snacks, and dress for the weather, sunscreen, hats, jacket etc. If possible, waterproof boots. The Watershed Stewardship Program has a limited supply and sizes of water boots to loan for this workshop. We will break for lunch, but there is not sufficient time to leave the site, so please pack your own lunch, snacks, and drinks.
