On August 4, 2021, representatives from the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, Georgia General Assembly, and Cobb County Board of Education gathered to dedicate the pedestrian hybrid beacon and crossing island on Veterans Memorial Highway to the memory of Ms. Edna Umeh.

The ceremony was held in front of Lindley Middle School where, on November 30, 2017, Ms. Edna Umeh was fatally struck by a motor vehicle while serving as a crossing guard for the school.

Her tragic death prompted a pedestrian-focused road safety audit of the corridor, the installation of safety improvements at this location, and the introduction of “Edna’s Law”.

Ms. Umeh’s family members joined state and local representatives in cutting the ribbon in recognition of Ms. Umeh’s service to the citizens of Cobb County and in memory of her untimely death in the line of duty.
