Winter Storm Preparedness Guide
Stay Safe, Stay Warm, Stay Informed
A winter storm is expected to arrive bringing 3–5 inches of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and ice. Temperatures will drop to the 20s to low 30s. Now is the time to prepare yourself, your family, your pets, and your home.
🧍 Personal & Family Preparedness
- Stock Up on Essentials: Have at least 3 days’ worth of food, water, and medications for everyone in your household.
- Emergency Kit: Prepare a kit with flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, warm clothing, and a first-aid kit.
- Charge Devices: Fully charge phones, tablets, and power banks in case of power outages.
- Stay Informed: Monitor local news, weather alerts, and emergency notifications.
- Stay Indoors: Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. If you must drive, ensure your vehicle is winter-ready and has an emergency kit.
- Dress Warmly: Layer clothing, wear hats, gloves, and waterproof boots when going outside.
🏠 Home Preparedness
- Prevent Frozen Pipes: Let faucets drip slightly, open cabinet doors under sinks, and insulate exposed pipes.
- Heating Safety: Use space heaters safely, keeping them at least 3 feet away from flammable items. Never leave them unattended.
- Check Your Heat Source: Ensure your furnace or alternative heat source is in working condition.
- Seal Drafts: Use weather stripping or towels to seal drafts around doors and windows.
- Prepare for Power Outages: Have extra blankets, sleeping bags, and firewood (if you have a fireplace) on hand.
🐾 Pet Preparedness
- Bring Pets Indoors: Pets should not be left outside during extreme cold.
- Provide Warm Shelter: If pets must remain outdoors, ensure they have a dry, insulated shelter with bedding and access to unfrozen water.
- Food & Water: Keep a 3-day supply of pet food and water.
- Watch for Signs of Hypothermia: Symptoms include shivering, weakness, and lethargy. Contact a vet immediately if noticed.
🚗 Vehicle Preparedness
- Winterize Your Car: Check antifreeze, battery, tire tread, and windshield wipers.
- Emergency Kit: Keep blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables, and a snow scraper in your vehicle.
- Full Tank: Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel lines from freezing.
- Avoid Travel: If possible, stay off the roads during the storm.
📢 After the Storm
- Shovel Safely: Take breaks when shoveling snow and avoid overexertion.
- Check on Neighbors: Especially elderly or vulnerable individuals.
- Beware of Ice: Watch out for slippery sidewalks and driveways.
- Inspect Home for Damage: Look for frozen pipes, roof damage, or other storm-related issues.
