Approved Rate Increase effective October 1, 2023

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved an adjustment to Water System rates increase effective October 1, 2023.

The Water System has faced a substantial increase in operating expenses and needs to fund capital improvements to our water, sewer, stormwater, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. Since 2021, our operating expenses have increased due to the following:

  • Increases in the costs of chemicals, biosolids disposal, wholesale water, and materials.
  • Increases in infrastructure replacement and upgrade construction projects

At this time, the average residential customer in Cobb County utilizes about 5,000 gallons of water per month and is charged about $54.85 for water and sewer plus a $7.00 service charge, which totals $61.85 per month. It should be noted that this is among the lowest rates in the Atlanta Metro area, and it is substantially lower than most other major counties. The Water System’s rate adjustment for all customers that would increase water commodity charges (cost per thousand gallons used) 7.5 percent and sewer commodity charges 8.5 percent. In addition, the Water System adjusting the monthly service charge for all meter sizes.

For the average residential water and sewer customer, the change would result in a monthly increase of $5.45. Even with the rate adjustment, our rates will remain lower than other major counties in the metro Atlanta area with our average residential customer paying $1.35 for the delivery of 100 gallons of treated water, removal of the water once used, treatment of the wastewater to a very high standard, and return of the resource to either Allatoona Lake or the Chattahoochee River where it is available for further use and enjoyment.

A comparison of current and proposed water and sewer costs to other utilities in the metro Atlanta area is provided below.
