10 steps to stay safe before, during, and after a flood

When faced with potential flooding, it's crucial to take proactive steps to ensure your safety and minimize property damage. Here are 10 actions you can take:

1. Stay Informed:

  • Monitor local news and weather updates through television, radio, or reliable online sources to stay aware of current conditions and forecasts.

2. Understand Flood Alerts:

  • Flood Watch: Conditions are favorable for flooding. Stay alert and be prepared to take action.
  • Flood Warning: Flooding is imminent or occurring. Take immediate action to protect yourself and your property.

3. Prepare an Emergency Kit:

  • Assemble a Ready kit with essential items such as non-perishable food, water, medications, important documents, and a flashlight. Ensure it's portable in case you need to evacuate.

4. Develop an Evacuation Plan:

  • Plan how you will leave and where you will go if advised to evacuate. Identify multiple routes and destinations, and communicate the plan with all household members.

5. Protect Important Documents:

  • Keep insurance policies, identification, and other critical documents in a safe deposit box. Store copies in a waterproof container within your emergency kit.

6. Elevate Utilities:

  • Reduce potential flood damage by raising your furnace, water heater, and electrical panel if they are in areas of your home that may be flooded.

7. Move Valuables to Higher Ground:

  • Relocate furniture, electronics, and other valuable items to higher floors or elevated areas to protect them from floodwaters.

8. Create a Family Communication Plan:

  • Establish a plan for contacting each other in case family members are separated during a flood. Choose a meeting place outside of your neighborhood in case you cannot return home due to flooded roads.

9. Avoid Floodwaters:

  • Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. They can be deeper and faster-moving than they appear and may contain hazards.

10. Heed Evacuation Orders:

  • If local authorities advise or order evacuation, do so promptly. Delaying can put you at greater risk as conditions can deteriorate rapidly.
