On March 26, 2020, Cobb County Board of Elections & Registration disqualified Gregory B. Gilstrap and Craig D. Owens as Democratic candidates for Sheriff. Both candidates appealed the decision to the Superior Court. On April 3, the Board agreed to a consent order with Gregory Gilstrap that reverses his disqualification. Today, the Cobb County Superior Court heard evidence regarding Mr. Owens’ appeal, and the judge reversed the decision of the Board. The judge ruled that Mr. Owens’ failure to submit the affidavit described in O.C.G.A. § 15-16-1 (c)(1)(J)(3) by the deadline in the code section was not a significant reason to disqualify an otherwise qualified candidate. Mr. Owens and Mr. Gilstrap are hereby qualified as candidates for the office of Sheriff in the May 19, 2020 Democratic General Primary.
