The Board of Commissioners has approved a contract to solidify the relationship between Cobb County and the Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation, Inc. and move forward with the construction and operation of a Veterans Memorial monument on county property.

The memorial, located at 520 South Fairground Street, is an initiative that began in 2016 to honor the service of military veterans. Since then, several steps have been taken to mutually accept expectations of the project, including approving a budget and establishing procedures for oversight of contributions from the county related to its construction.

“This day has been a long time coming for all veterans from all branches of service,” said Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, who has helped shepherd the plans for the monument since its inception. “This is going to a beautiful piece of honorarium to our veterans.”

The property where the monument will be constructed is already maintained by PARKS staff and will not require additional resources. The new Memorandum of Understanding approved by the Board will allow the Foundation to raise the bulk of the money needed for the project.
