Cobb Senior Services (CSS) has received the ‘Excellence in AT Service Delivery Team Award’ at the GA DHS Division of Aging’s ADRC Healthy Communities Summit in Savannah. CSS was nominated by the Atlanta Regional Commission, a planning and intergovernmental coordinating agency which supports healthy living and healthy aging throughout the metro Atlanta area.

CSS won the award for its Assistive Technology Lab, which was established in 2017. Featuring over 100 demonstration items, the Lab’s mission is to increase knowledge, access and utilization of AT among older adults and people with disabilities. With designated areas to showcase items in a demo bathroom, living room and kitchen, tours of this interactive space allow individuals to try out different devices.  

While this initiative began as a space to “try before you buy,” CSS now provides some equipment to individuals in the community at no cost through a partnership with Friends of Disabled Adults and Children.  

“This was an amazing award for Senior Services,” said Director of Cobb County Senior Services Jatunn Gibson. “The Assistive Technology Lab is one of a kind. Cobb Senior Services continues to offer products that will assist our older adults and their families with tasks. We give tours of the Lab and welcome people to walk through, view, and test the many devices that we have available.”

This year the Lab has increased the availability of devices for Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) clients by establishing the AT Client Assistance Program to purchase devices that assist with Activities of Daily Living. Currently, Lab activities center around raising awareness and improving the availability of assistive technology.
