Cobb honored for engineering excellence in transportation
Cobb County recently earned two prestigious honors for the Barrett Parkway and Paper Mill Road Bridge projects. These transportation improvement projects won the American Council of Engineering
Companies of Georgia's 2014 Engineering Excellence Awards.
The widening of Barrett Parkway, from Burnt Hickory Road to U.S. Highway 41/Cobb Parkway, was a $28 million project funded by the 2005 Special Local Option Sales Tax. The project widened Barrett Parkway from four to six lanes with a wide grass median, added turn lanes and added and upgraded traffic signals. This helps increase roadway capacity, reduce delays, minimize environmental impacts and improve safety. The project also includes a multi-use trail to provide pedestrian connectivity to the countywide trail system.
The $2.5 million Paper Mill Road Bridge (pictured) was a 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project that replaced the original bridge, which had a poor structural sufficiency rating, no sidewalks and was weight-restricted. The new, wider bridge includes a six foot sidewalk on the south side, providing access to National Park Service trails and completely spans Sope Creek to avoid future flooding problems.

Explorers win top positions at regional competition

Of the 3,150 participants, Cobb County Police Explorers finished first in “Domestic Violence,” first in “Felony Traffic Stops,” first in "DUI" and second in “Individual Officer Survival.” They also placed first in “Team Volleyball.” We congratulate participants and their advisors for their accomplishments.

New app helps residents submit DOT work requests alt
A new smart phone and Web based tool, YourGOV, allows residents to submit non-emergency service requests directly to the Department of Transportation work management system. By accessing the YourGOV Web site or using the smart device app, residents can photograph a problem and request that work be completed at a specified location.

YourGOV service requests relate to roadway issues like potholes, traffic signals, debris, signs, storm drains and sidewalks. People are able to track the progress of their requests and receive automatic updates throughout the lifecycle of the requests. YourGOV is for reporting non-emergency issues only. If immediate police or fire department response is needed, please call 911. For more information, visit here

Pedestrian bridges on Silver Comet Trail set to close for repairs
Cobb Department of Transportation maintenance crews are replacing the wooden board deck on the Silver Comet Bridge over the East-West Connector.  Pedestrian traffic is being maintained through the construction site during the deck replacement.  Warning signage is clearly posted on each approach to the bridge advising of construction activity.   Bikers should expect to stop and dismount when approaching the bridge for their own safety as well as those of the construction workers.  Since traffic is being maintained during the replacement, the work will take from 45 to 60 days depending on the weather.
Closure dates released for Silver Comet Trail pedestrian bridge repair work

Cobb County to become Braves countryalt
I am proud to announce the Atlanta Braves and Cobb County have reached a draft agreement for a new world-class Major League Baseball stadium here.

The agreement calls for the Braves to fund 55 percent of the project cost while the remaining 45 percent will be paid for locally. The new ballpark at the intersection of Interstates 75 and 285 will host the Atlanta Braves Opening Day in Cobb beginning in 2017 and will continue to do so for at least 30 years.
The Atlanta Braves are a great organization and will be a welcome addition to Cobb County. Our focus is on finalizing the agreement that will bring jobs and economic growth to the area while enhancing the experience of sports fans from across metro Atlanta.

Highlights of the Cobb County funding plan include a mix of local funding sources that will total $300 million. There are no increases in the property tax millage rate for homeowners in the plan.
The Braves contribution of $370 million towards the new stadium will quickly generate new jobs and a growing payroll. Construction on the stadium is expected to begin in 2014 and is expected to generate more than 5,227 jobs with an estimated $235 million in payroll. The Atlanta Braves will also be responsible for any construction cost overruns.

With a total investment of $672 million, the new stadium will be centerpiece for what is expected to be a world-class entertainment district, featuring new retail, restaurants and hotels on adjoining parcels.

There will be multiple access points to the site, as it is also near U.S. 41/Cobb Parkway, and we will work with the state Department of Transportation to make numerous improvements for the flow of traffic through the area.
We expect the Board of Commissioners to vote on a memo of understanding during its Nov. 26 meeting, which will be the next step for the continuance of this plan. I look forward to sharing more about this exciting opportunity with you as information becomes available.

Funding details for the project are available at www.cobbcounty.org.
